It seemed to be coming from the area around the transistor, but I can't say for sure. The first time I took the keyboard apart I noticed an "overheated component" smell. Anyway, it initiated a cycle of disk access. I jiggled the cable (to the CPU) at one point and the IIgs interpreted this as a command to restart, I believe. I tried restarting, tried swapping cables nothing. But it froze after maybe fifteen seconds, and thereafter would not move. I moved the mouse and the pointer moved, briefly. Loading progressed to the desktop and the mouse cursor changed from clock to pointer. I reassembled the keyboard and plugged it back in, then restarted the IIgs, loading GSOS from a 3.5 disk**.
With a multimeter I confirmed conductivity from one ADB port to the other, each of the four pins, and the traces and solder joints as well.

I don't know how to separate them without de-soldering some 70+ switches.ĭoes anyone know a person or company that makes repairs to these boards? My problem is that the keyswitch layer appears to be soldered to the PCB, and the switches themselves physically attached to the switch layer.
#Apple computer keyboard repair driver
I suspect the keyboard (which once belonged to a school system, apparently) has been the victim of misuse perhaps one too many "hot plug-ins" or stray static electricity has fried a line driver IC or something. There was indeed one connection on the left ADB port that looked weak I re-soldered it but after reassembly the problem persisted. I took the keyboard apart for cleaning and while apart I examined the PCB. I read previous posts, here and elsewhere, stating that the ADB port's connection to the PCB itself is fragile and can strain the solder joints, ultimately breaking them. Depending on which way the mouse and computer cables are connected the CPU either sees nothing or sees keyboard only. Purchased "untested" from an eBay reseller, the board has a problem and therefore so do I: The ADB port on the left side of the keyboard is not transmitting / receiving. Kbd is Apple part # 658-4081, picture attached. Acquired a keyboard for the Apple II GS that I obtained recently.
